“But obviously it has been going on in the back- ground for a fortnight now so I’m glad it is done.
“Preston didn’t really want to lose me but sometimes finances determine these things in football.
“I enjoyed my time at Preston but, as soon as I found out that Boro were in for me just before the deadline, there was no doubt I wanted to make the move. It is big step up for me.
“I want to play in the Premier League and I want to go to a World Cup for Ireland and playing at a bigger club and with quality players can only help me in that.
“It will be tough getting into that back four to be fair. They’ve been playing well, had a lot of clean sheets early on and so it is obviously a strong unit. I’ll have to work hard to get in and stay in and I’m looking forward to that.
“I think this move can really help me develop as a player.
“It’s a great club with a great manager. The gaffer and his assistant were both centre-backs and they’ve both played for their country so I think I can learn a lot from them.”
