Lamb has refuted claims that Gordon Strachan was appointed as new Boro manager while Gareth Southgate was still in office.

The Boro chief executive stressed that Strachan was not offered the post until Southgate was sacked after the win over Derby County.

Lamb: “I first met Gordon at our game at Coventry. He was there with his grandson watching the game.

“We chatted and he told me that he had spent the previous five months on holidays.

“I asked him if he would ever consider going back into management.

“He said that he would, if the right job ever came along.

“After Gareth had departed from the club I contacted Gordon and asked him if he would be interested in the challenge at Middlesbrough. He said that he would.

“That’s when we starting talking about the possibilities of him taking over here.

“Those talks continued and were concluded over the weekend.

“We have done everything that’s right and proper and I believe in the best interests of Middlesbrough Football Club.”
