Wheater reflects on nightmare year

The 23-year-old, who could be sold next month as the club considers cashing in on a man who could leave for free during the summer, is convinced the new year will bring better fortunes for the Teessiders.

He told the Evening Gazette: "This really has been a terrible year and I will be glad to see the back of it.

"For me personally and the club as a whole, it has been a nightmare year. I have had I don't know how many partners and two managers and the whole year has been a real struggle with some very poor results and very poor performances.

"But I think we are starting to turn the corner now. The team is looking more solid and stable, especially at the back, and I think we are definitely playing better now.

"I'm sure that in the new year, the results will start to come."
