The Australian international was a smash hit at Burnley during a loan spell in the Championship at the tail end of last season and has impressed for Boro during this summer’s warm-up matches.
David Wheater: “It was a great goal from Rhys at Carlisle, he’s scoring for fun at the moment.
“I’m pleased for him because he’s a fantastic player and has made his international debut so it’s all going well for him at the moment.
“I’m not sure who the gaffer has in mind as his back four, I’m not bothered as long as I’m in there!
“Rhys coming on shows there’s good competition in the back four and you’ll only keep your place if you’re playing well enough.
“None of us can take our places for granted and Rhys has given the manager plenty to think about. He’s got a lot of quality and this could be a big season for him.
“I’m pleased for him but he’s got a battle on his hands if he wants my place in the side!”
