Reports indicate that the 63-year-old spoke to Boro chairman Steve Gibson and chief executive Keith Lamb at the weekend and an offer was made to the ex-England manager.

Venables will take his time to consider the offer as he manages the England team in this weeks celebrity Soccer Aid.

Ex-Boro captain Tony Mowbray fueled rumours that he could take the vacant Boro job when he turned down the job at Ipswich.

The odds on Iain Dowie have shortened after he walked out of Crystal Palace this week, but Charlton will also have designs on the Hertfordshire born Northern Irishman.
