Tottenham complete signing of Djed Spence from Middlesbrough

Tottenham have confirmed the signing of wing-back Djed Spence from Middlesbrough on a five-year contract.

The announcement brings an end to a long, protracted saga which sees Spurs - who first enquired about Spence's summer availability in January - finally land one of their primary transfer targets.

Spence becomes Tottenham's sixth signing of the summer and will importantly count towards their homegrown quota ahead of their return to the Champions League next season.

Spence spent the 2021/22 season on loan at Nottingham Forest and played a key role in helping them win promotion to the Premier League via the Championship play-offs.

Forest retained an interest in signing Spence on a permanent deal, as did various other top-flight clubs, but most backed away from a deal when it looked inevitable that he would join Tottenham - a prospect even Boro boss Chris Wilder admitted looked very likely last month.

Spence follows Ivan Perisic, Fraser Forster, Yves Bissouma, Richarlison and Clement Lenglet in joining Spurs this summer.
