Boro are £90m in debt - most of it owed to chairman Steve Gibson - and boss Southgate is worried about the long-term future of the club.

Southgate: "It's difficult for clubs in the lower half of the Premier League.

"You can continue a process of just trying to survive by spending beyond your means, or you can try and build something long term.

"If we don't stay in this division it'll have a huge financial implication.

"But staying in the league, I'm not sure where that would leave us financially."
