The transfer market

The rumours have not just been about incoming players either, there have been strong reports regarding the future of Boro captain Gareth Southgate who has been linked with Newcastle, Manchester United and Liverpool.

Carlos Marinelli will start the new season as a Boro player as his projected move to Torino fell through after the 20-year-old failed to agree terms with the recently relegated side.

On the incoming front, the first disappointment would seem to be the loss of Geremi, his club Real Madrid slapping £9.5m price tag on his head. A price that Boro will not pay in a climate of diminishing transfer fees, although talks are still continuing between the two clubs.

It would appear as we write that Boro have failed in a late bid to snatch Blackburn's David Dunn from under the noses of Birmingham City. A long time target of Steve McClaren, Dunn has agreed terms with the Blues and will sign this afternoon.

Boro have also lost out on the signature of Eric Djemba-Djemba from Nantes who will sign for Manchester United tomorrow.

Throughout the summer Boro have been linked with players from all over europe, the most frequent names being Brett Emerton, Trevor Sinclair and Marc Overmars.

Finally, Boro are in talks with Celta Vigo over the future of Dorival who spent the latter part of last season on Teesside. McClaren would like to tie up a permanent deal for the Brazilian who impressed during his short stay.
