Szil scares England

The game was in doubt during the afternoon but was given the go ahead on a uneven sodden pitch. In a poor first half display England were punished by Slovakia who adapted to the conditions much better than England.

A first half lead was well deserved by Slovakia with Nemeth being the thorn in the side for England. The Boro star gave the England defence, including Boro team mate Gareth Southgate, a torid time and he was central in all of Slovakia's dangerous moves throughout the first half.

A fortuitous goal by David Beckham 20 minutes into the second half revitalised England, who went on to grab the winner inside the last 10 minutes when Michael Owen headed home a poor clearance by the Slovakian defence.
