Southgate Wanted To See Red!

Southgate: “Lita was through on goal. He was pulled down by the Coventry defender and there was only the two of them in the picture.

“In a situation like that it had to be a red card. But the referee produces a yellow card instead and it’s a very, very poor decision.

“I don’t want to use the referee as an excuse, but there’s no hiding behind the fact that it was an important mistake.

“We’ve no problem with the extra time which was added on. But it doesn’t alter the fact that the time added on should have been for a red card, not a yellow one.

“We spoke about the need to push forward in the second half and get the third goal which would have killed the game.

“For 20 minutes we promised to do that, but we conceded a bad goal and it gave Coventry a lift.

“It was harsh for us over the overall picture, but we should have done better.”
