Southgate Not Offering Any Excuses!

Gareth Southgate (talking to the Sunday Times): "I am conscious that we can't use our financial situation as an excuse because people don't want to hear that.

"The reason why there is such a high turnover of managers in the Premier League is because expectations come from the realms of fantasy.

"Fortunately, I have a chairman who is not a fantasist.

"He has been through an administration at this club, picked it up and lived the highs and lows of the last 15 years.

"He makes judgements based on what is happening behind the scenes at the club, and not just on what happens on a Saturday afternoon.

"Steve gave me an opportunity and then fought for me to be allowed to do the job, so I treat his money as if it was my own and anybody who knows me understands that's very carefully.

"We have a tough financial situation, our Premier League status is in danger and if the people who have the skills and the ability to lead decided it was too difficult a situation, who is going to take responsibility?

"Nowadays we don't get a fall of snow anymore, it's the worst snow for 40 years. This is the worst recession ever and our club has just had its worst ever run of results.

"Who is going to fight against the negativity?

"I believe the chairman is the most influential leader in the town of Middlesbrough and at the football club right now we have to be strong."
