Gareth Southgate: “I take full responsibility for what happened last season, and accept a large proportion of our fans wanted to see change in terms of the manager.
“The chairman looked at the work he has seen going on behind the scenes, and decided that he wasn’t prepared to make a managerial change this summer.
“But he expects to see results very quickly. I accept that, and know I have to get results very quickly. We need to be competitive throughout the year and we need to start the season well.
“I would certainly think that if we don’t get promoted, the decision (over his future) will have been taken out of my hands. The chairman has given me the responsibility of getting this club promoted, and I have to take it on.”
