Ex-Boro star Dean Windass (now player coach at Darlington) believes Hughes (33) is just the man Boro need to help shoot them back into the top flight at the first attempt.

Dean Windass: "Boro would be getting a lad who played a big part in getting Hull into the Premier League.

"He's also played for Charlton and Birmingham and knows exactly what is needed. I would never recommend anyone who I felt would not do a job.

"Bryan is a versatile and quality player. He is most comfortable in central midfield, where he can use his great passing skills and fitness levels, though he also did well on the left for Hull.

"He didn't get much of a look in under Phil Brown last season, and is like me - he just wants to play football.

"I think that he would jump at the chance to join Boro, and he would settle in straight away. He's settled in Hull where his family has moved. His children are at school there, but Middlesbrough is no distance away - local in football terms - and he could easily settle into a flat up here during the week.

"He has experience in abundance, and I feel Boro will need characters like him in the coming season. I think coming to Boro would do both Bryan and the club the world of good."
