Gareth Southgate: "We looked to try to boost the squad - we haven't been able to.

"It's hard, anyway, to bring players to the club because of the finances of other clubs, and obviously the league position is difficult, as is getting players other clubs don't want to sell.

"But in the likes of Matthew Bates and Josh Walker in the last couple of weeks, we have added a couple of players who have shown they can play at this level.

"He (Walker) has shown leadership, he has shown a willingness to get on the ball, which in a run like this is commendable.

"He has looked like an experienced player and he is an added member of the squad because we know it's a struggle to go out and buy people or to attract people to the club.

"He has been superb. He limped off with an ankle injury in tears three and a half weeks ago and has worked his nuts off to get himself fit and to get himself available for selection.

"He deserved his place in the side on Saturday and rewarded us with a super performance."
