It is believed that Boro paid around £1m to Barcelona to release the 23-year-old from his three year loan spell at Sporting Lisbon.
Abel Xavier signed a one year deal shortly before the midnight deadline. The Portuguese full-back was a free agent after being released by Roma at the end of last season.
It was also confirmed last night that Michael Reiziger has joined PSV Eindhoven on a free transfer.
