Robbo returns . . . . . against Boro!

After leaving Boro in 2001 Robbo has spent much of his time away from the game, although he did have a short spell managing Bradford and was employed by Manchester United in some sort of coaching role.

He will be fondly remembered on Teesside for the manager who spent Steve Gibson's millions when bringing in the likes of Nick Barmby, Juninho, Fabrizio Ravanelli, Emerson, Paul Merson etc.

Love him or hate him, for the first five years he did a great job on Teesside, taking us to three Wembley finals and bouncing back from relegation at the first attempt.

On a personal note my greatest ever season as a Boro fan was the 1996-97 season when despite relegation we managed two trips to Wembley. The football was exciting edge of the seat stuff when you just didn't want the final whistle to go, and you couldn't wait for the next game.

Sadly the final two years were a bit of an anticlimax, he had run out of ideas and the excitement on the pitch was declining, only a desperate call to Terry Venables saved Boro's Premiership status in his final season.

Robbo has drafted in another Boro favourite as his assistant. Once Boro captain Nigel Pearson will help with his managerial experience from Carlisle and Stoke.
