Afterward the game, McClaren said: "We should have won it. To score two goals and to be twice ahead, that aspect of our performance was excellent, but I'm disappointed with the way we conceded our two goals. We had the advantage and if you are going to win away in Europe then you have to defend a whole lot better than we did for the two goals, and they were poor goals. You need total concentration."

He went on to add. "We know we can be a lot better, but if we are to progress then we will have to defend better, although we are capable of doing that. We have kept clean sheets in Europe before now. So we go back to the Riverside with an advantage, although there is still a long way to go in this tie. We have to finish off the job we started here."
