The Austrian defender is due to return to training early this week after recovering from a knee injury.

With Andrew Taylor also expected to shake off the hip flexor injury which forced him to drop out of the Manchester United game, Gareth Southgate’s defensive options will increase for the short trip to Newcastle.

Southgate: “We hope to see Pogatetz in training this week, but it’s too early to say what will happen next Monday.

“However Taylor should definitely be back. He was just feeling his hip flexor a bit and it wasn’t worth taking the risk with him on Saturday.”

Justin Hoyte deputised at left back against United and could be contesting the right back role at Newcastle, along with Tony McMahon and even Matthew Bates.
