The 25-year-old joined Boro in January 2007 in a £5million deal from Portsmouth, and the player has made it known he wants a return to the South coast.
O'Neil has never settled in the North East and was linked with a move back to Portsmouth earlier in the summer.Southgate has told O'Neil he will not be allowed to leave the club this month, but the player is ready to hand in a transfer request to try and push through a deal back to Fratton Park.
