The statement today only added to the speculation from media sources in Italy that the Empoli striker was on his way to Teesside for talks over a five year deal.

It is belived that Boro have agreed a £8.5m fee for the 22-year-old Italian who made his debut for the Azzurri against England in February and starred for the Italian U-21's in the recent European U-21 Championship.

His agent Paolo Fabbri was quoted as saying "We are both going to Middlesbrough. Maccarone will have his medical test and we will evaluate the contract."

He added "It is likely to be a four or five-year deal. On Friday he will sign the contract and he will be presented. He is very happy. It is a great opportunity for him to join Middlesbrough and play in the Premiership."
