With Leroy Lita facing a lengthy lay-off with a torn hamstring, Mowbray could look to Marvin Emnes or Merouane Zemmama to provide the support to the Australia international.
He told the club's official website: "We finished the Portsmouth game with Marvin and Merouane up front and neither of them would you say are front-line strikers.
"Scott McDonald has looked very sharp in training. Maybe the blend of McDonald and a more creative partner might suit him.
"Scott and Leroy would consider themselves front-line strikers who want to get on the end of things.
"Let's see if the balance of Scott and another player helps Scott get into better goalscoring positions."
