At 46-years-old Mr Walton is one of the older referees on todays circuit. He started refereeing in the Football League in 1998 and after officiating in the 2003 LDV Vans Trophy Final he was promoted to the Premier League List.

Last season he officiated in 42 games, producing the yellow card 126 times and the red card 6 times.

His stats for last season included two Boro games, the 1-0 Carling Cup win at Everton and the 2-2 league draw with West Brom at the Riverside, in which he booked a total of four players.
