Mac shuns Intertoto

Wary of the burn out suffered by Fulham and Aston Villa this season, McClaren says he won't allow Boro to suffer the same fate.

"Players need a break and to come back that early I don't think is good preparation for what I think is the important thing, the Premiership," he said.

Clubs competing in the Intertoto Cup must start their season in June and success in the competition can mean a substantial amount of games are played before the season proper.

McClaren feels the promise of a UEFA Cup place does not justify the risk to Boro's league form.
