Steward Downing set the ball rolling by blaming the board for the lack of investment, which he blamed for his transfer request, but is that the root cause for the club's demise?

Not according to Keith Lamb, who is trying to paint a picture - wearing his rose-coloured specs - showing the most "attractive" Boro side in 20 years.

Chairman Steve Gibson has told Southgate the cupboard is bare, and he will not be getting involved in the January transfer window, unless he digs in the bargain bin.

And that has not only frustrated Southgate ... but the fans know full well we MUST strengthed if we want to banish relegation fears.

Executive Keith Lamb's programme notes. "Gareth has assembled a squad that's far better than its current league placing suggests.

"Indeed, it's one of the most attractive and exciting squads of my two decades as chief executive.

"Gareth has his backroom staff are intent on everyone remaining focused and together in applying themselves to ensure we achieve the results that will move us up the league to a position that accurately reflects the squad's quality."
