Jonathan Woodgate Sacked as Middlesbrough Manager & Replaced by Neil Warnock

Middlesbrough have confirmed that Jonathan Woodgate has been relieved of his duties as first-team manager, with Neil Warnock coming in to replace him.

Boro have dropped to 21st in the Championship table and won just two of their last 15 games in all competitions before football was postponed.

The club took to their official website to confirm the decision, writing: "MFC can confirm that head coach Jonathan Woodgate has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect.

"Jonathan was relieved of his role on Tuesday morning and will be replaced by the experienced Neil Warnock. Warnock will assume responsibility immediately. The club would like to place on record its thanks to Jonathan for all his work in the role of head coach."

Since his arrival at the Riverside Stadium last summer, Woodgate had attracted plenty of criticism from fans who were stunned to see Boro drop into a relegation battle. They finished seventh last season, missing out on the playoffs by just one point.

Woodgate has led Boro into a relegation battle

His desire to play attacking football simply has not worked, and the 3-0 loss to Swansea City on Saturday left Boro level on points with 22nd-placed Hull City, with just two goals separating the two on goal difference.

He has now been replaced by Warnock, who is seen as somewhat of a specialist in the Championship, having managed to clinch promotion to the top flight on eight separate occasions.

Neil Warnock is back in management after leaving Cardiff in November

Warnock had been out of work since November following his departure from Cardiff City, but he will now switch his focus towards preparing his new side for Saturday's trip to the bet365 Stadium to face Stoke City.

After that, Boro will come face to face with Hull at the KCOM Stadium, in a game which has 'relegation six-pointer' written all over it.
