The 36-year-old Dutchman, who also played at Cardiff, Leeds and Chelsea, has announced his retirement having not been offered a new deal by Cardiff at the end of last season.
"He had offers to play in the Middle East, which he didn't want to do," said Hasselbaink's agent Humphrey Nijman.
"It is Jimmy's ambition now to become a coach."
Hasselbaink made just under 100 appearance's during his two years at Boro between 2004 and 2006.
