Boro players rattled in four international goals in midweek and manager Gareth Southgate believes it will give them ... and the club ... a major boost.

Marvin Emnes netted twice for the Dutch Under-21 side, Adam Johnson scored a wonder goal for England Under-21s against Ecuador, and Mohamed Shawky was on target for Egypt against Ghana.

Gareth Southgate: "It's terrific for the lads to get away into a different environment and do so well.

"It will do their confidence the world of good and I hope we can reap the benefit. We have struggled for goals, and now a few of the players have had that feeling of hitting the net again.

"It can only be good for us, even though their midweek goals were scored in different levels of football. We need more goals and we need them from all areas.

"Midweek internationals are not a distraction when you do well in them. It's the same for Stewart Downing who will have benefited from playing for England against Spain."
