Top of the pile is Boro captain Gareth Southgate who is in the England squad for their friendly against Portugal at Villa Park. Gareth will be hoping to participate after watching all of England’s World Cup campaign from the bench.

Allan Johnston is with the Scotland squad for their European Championship qualifier against the Faroe Islands in Torshavn. Robbie Stockdale was controversially told not to travel by Berti Vogts because he would miss the start of the squad training due to Boro’s midweek game at Old Trafford.

Mark Crossley is also hoping to play in a European Championship qualifier for Wales against Finland in Helsinki. He is one of four keepers in the squad with Southampton keeper Paul Jones favourite to start.

All three games are on Saturday.

Two Boro youngsters also feature on the international scene this weekend. Stuart Parnaby has been promoted to the England U-21 squad for their friendly against Yugoslavia at the Reebok Stadium on Friday.

Brian Close is with the Northern Ireland U-21 squad for their match against Scotland in St. Mirren, also on Friday.
