Egaleo: Uncovered

Egaleo are a small club from the western suburbs of the Greek capital Athens. They were formed in 1931 and have enjoyed spells in the Greek first division as well as spells in the lower reaches of Greek football. They are still to win their first domestic trophy.

Currently the Egalio Stadium holds just over 3,500, this is due in the main to an earthquake with shook the Greek capital in 1999. The stadium, with a record attendance of 17,917 was opened in 1968.

The damage to the main stand was deemed too dangerous by engineers, while it was also revealed that another stand, recently built, was built without planning permission.

After the earthquake Egaleo played their football at Peristeri Stadium (until 2001) and the Korydallos Stadium (2001-2002) season. They have now returned to Egaleo Stadium where only two sides of the ground are open, hence the need to play their UEFA Cup games at the larger Rizouploli Stadium.

Egalio earned the right to play in this year UEFA Cup by finishing fifth in the Ethniki Katigoria last season. They were knocked out of the Greek Cup in the second round.

Like Boro, Egaleo are making their debuts in the UEFA Cup. They eliminated Turkish side Gençlerbirligi in the first round, 2-1 on aggregate.

The Turks themselves accounted for Blackburn, Sporting Clube de Portugal and Parma in last years competition, before being knocked out by the eventual winners, Valencia, in the fourth round.

Two players topped the scoring charts for the Athens side last season, they were Giorgos Barkoglou and Tassos Agritis, who scored nine each. Both are still with the club.

This season Egaleo are unbeaten in the Ethniki Katigoria, but then again they have only played four games, two of which have been won and two drawn. They currently lie fifth in the table behind leaders Panathinaikos.
