The People: "Gareth Southgate will sell Stewart Downing to Tottenham in a bid to fend off shock interest from Real Madrid in his England Under-21 starlet Adam Johnson.

"Middlesbrough boss Southgate has agreed to sell left-winger Downing to Spurs in a cash-plus player deal, although he has yet to agree the identity of the player or players who will move to the Riverside as makeweights."
