Derby County's boss Nigel Clough has beaten off Gareth Southgate's efforts to sign Everton striker James Vaughan on loan.

England Under-21 star Vaughan, the Premier League’s youngest goalscorer from when he found the net at 16 years and 271 days against Crystal Palace in 2005, has agreed a 93-day stay at Pride Park.

Yesterday David Moyes said the player could leave on loan, and Boro seemed to have the edge.
