Cheer up Peter Reid . . .

Peter Reid says his achievements since taking over in 1995 with the club on the brink of relegation to Division Two speak for themselves, and only a minority of the fans are after his head.

The Black Cats surprised many people when they were promoted three seasons ago and almost qualified for Europe in their first season in the top flight, but things have gone steadily backward.

A 5-0 defeat at the hands of lowly Ipswich and an FA Cup exit at the hands of First Division West Brom has not helped matters in the past couple of weeks.

I personally know several Mackem's who are disgusted with the Reid's management style and their inability to spend big and wisely. You just have to listen to the Three Legends on Century to understand the bad feeling.

Reid was quoted as saying "There is no chance I will ever want to resign from this job, it is not in the make up, as they say. I think we are only talking about a minority of fans who are having a go, the majority are behind us."

"I have had letters but I make no apologies for seeing the way it is in a balanced view. This club has finished seventh, seventh and is now eleventh and that has not happened since 1939."

"The game is all about opinion but that is not opinion, it is fact and I make no bones about it. I think I have served this football club well and I think we will get there."

"We have not played well this season and we are eleventh. Hopefully once we start playing well we will improve on that. The big picture is this club is financially sound and it can go from strength to strength."

"I know when I leave this club it will be a lot, lot healthier than when I came here. Then, this club had seven games to go and it was going down to the old Third Division. It did not have any money, it was still at Roker Park where now we have a new stadium."

Surely he's pinched Robbo's script, it's almost word-for-word what the ex-Boro boss was saying for the last eighteen months of his reign at the Riverside.

Mark my words Monkey Head is digging a bigger hole for himself, if the rumours about Phillips going to Tottenham, or anywhere else come true, he will be packing his bags.

How good would it make me and several thousands others feel, including the Geordie's. Cheer up Peter Reid, oh what can it be, to a sad Mackem bastard and a shite football team.
