Nash will join forces with representatives of Hartlepool and Darlington football clubs, children from Abingdon Junior School, Middlesbrough, and chief fire and police officers to promote the fireworks safety radio advertising campaign.

The pupils will be among the children and young people targeted by the campaign to cut the number of injuries from fireworks and bonfires in the lead up to November 5.

The radio adverts will be broadcast on stations from the Borders to Teesside and carry a hard-hitting message that people can be killed, seriously injured and disfigured by fooling with fireworks and by building their own bonfires.

Under new Fireworks Regulations it is now illegal for:

• Shops to sell fireworks to under-18s
• For a person under 18 to possess fireworks in a public place
• For members of the public to possess Category 4 fireworks, i.e. the largest, most powerful used by professionals

Nash says: “Fireworks can be great fun in the right hands, but if you fool around with them you could end up getting seriously hurt – or worse. I want young people to enjoy themselves on Bonfire Night and to act responsibly.”

Alan Brown, director of the communities group responsible for crime reduction at Government Office North-East, said: “This is a terrific example of how the crime reduction and safety partnerships can work with other partners to make a real difference to the safety of our communities.”
