Boros Bennett keeping his feet on the ground

The young left-back is expected to earn his second cap for the England Under 21s in Denmark tonight before a third could follow against Iceland at Preston next Monday.

His inclusion in Stuart Pearce's first team squad for the second time, he earned his first cap against Italy last month, is a further indication that his performances at club level are being noted.

Sunderland, Newcastle and Liverpool are among the clubs known to be keeping an eye on the Rochdale-born defender who joined Middlesbrough's Academy ten years ago after impressing for Northallerton Corinthians.

Middlesbrough are aware of the interest being shown in one of their brightest prospects, but are satisfied he has the right mentality not to be distracted by those watching in the stands.

"I know there are scouts coming to the games, that's because there are a number of young lads in this team, it's not just about me," said Bennett.

"But I don't concentrate on that, I am concentrating on giving 100 per cent for Middlesbrough and helping this club to do well.

"This is like a second home for me now. I have been in Middlesbrough for a long time, the club means a lot to me.

"I moved here when I was ten and I was pretty much with Middlesbrough from that age after being scouted playing in Northallerton."

Bennett was one of the star performers of Middlesbrough's 2-1 win over Watford at the Riverside Stadium last weekend, with Mowbray eulogising the performance from him.

The 20-year-old has become a key member of Mowbray's starting line-up, with his attacking style perfectly suited to the way the Boro boss wants his team to play.

He was handed a new four-year deal earlier this year on the back of his promising displays, which is a far cry from the time he was left to play in the reserves by Gordon Starchan.

Now he wants to cap his turnaround this season by making sure Middlesbrough build on the nine-point gap that they have built up over the relegation zone.

"We have been trying to grind out results recently but it was better than that on Saturday against Watford, it was enjoyable to play in," he said. "Since Tony has taken over, it's been brilliant for me. I can only thank him for that and I want to stay in there. We have to keep out of the relegation zone and keep picking up the points by winning.

"The gaffer wants to make sure I don't get carried away, when he knew I was doing this interview he joked for me not to tell everyone 'how good I was'. He wants to keep me focused on what is in hand.

"The old gaffer didn't really fancy me. The new manager believed in me straight away. I am still not sure what went wrong under Gordon Strachan, but it's different now. I just want to stay in there and keep the shirt."

Before the visit of Leicester to the Riverside on April 2, Bennett is eager to make the most of his opportunities with the Under-21s.

He was part of the Under-19s squad that reached the final of the European Championships two years ago and has big hopes of staying in the thinking of England coach Stuart Pearce.

Middlesbrough, meanwhile, could have skipper Matthew Bates back in action for the trip to Sheffield United on April 9.

Bates has been out of action since pulling his hamstring at Crystal Palace on February 5 but he is due to return to full training at the end of next week.

He has an outside chance of figuring against Leicester, although the trip to Bramall Lane is looking more likely after returning from health checks in the United States with encouraging news.
