Bolton boss Gary Megson is ready to make a £4m bid for midfielder Gary O'Neil but faces competition from Portsmouth.

Megson went to St James' Park to watch the 25-year-old in action and was impressed with his all-action display.

He could face stiff competition from O'Neil's former club Portsmouth while several other Premier League clubs are ready to declare an interest.

A whole host of Middlesbrough's first-team squad could be on their way out of the Riverside with Downing, Tuncay and Matthew Bates already being linked with moves away.
