The Reserves poor run continued with a late Everton strike giving the visitors a 2-1 victory. However, the purpose of the game was to give this very young team more experience. This they got with Everton dominating the early exchanges, their side containing Francis Jeffers, David Unsworth and Niclas Alexandersson.

The first goal came in the 23rd minute with Nick Chadwick putting the Blues ahead. Boro fought back strongly after the break and scored after 63 minutes with Gary Smith blasting an unstoppable shot past Simonsen from 25-yards. After the goal, the Boro threatened to score on more than one occasion but Everton made the Boro pay for their misses with Osman hitting the winner.
