Boro have announced they will not be commenting on speculation but The Sun claim Joe Kinnear was willing to do the deal.

Boro were interested in Smith when he completed a £6m move to Tyneside from Manchester United 18 months ago, but he has allegedly told Newcastle he intends staying at St James' Park.
