Boro need bite in the middle of the park, and although Rangers played down Newcastle's interest in Ferguson, reports from Glasgow claim the Ibrox club would consider an offer of £3m.

The 30-year-old has suffered serious injury worries this season, and he has yet to prove he is capable of returning to the form that made him a Rangers hero.

Ferguson demanded showdown talks with chairman Sir David Murray over his Ibrox future, and the club seem willing to cash in on a player past his sell-by date.

The Scotland captain rejoined Gers in 2005 after a two-year spell with Blackburn, has been unsettled with talk in the past week of him being sold to help ease the club's financial problems.

But struggled in the Premiership when he was at the peak of his game ... and Boro fans must be concerned about him moving to the Riverside.
