Boro were also linked this week with interest in Leeds United striker Jermaine Beckford, who has turned down the offer of a three-year contract extension at Elland Road and been placed on the transfer list.
Beckford, who has scored 54 goals in 82 starts for Leeds, is likely to cost around £3m.
