Anthony Elanga racially abused after Middlesbrough penalty miss

Anthony Elanga was subjected to racist abuse following Manchester United's penalty-shootout defeat to Middlesbrough in the FA Cup.

Elanga missed the decisive spot kick to send Boro through and had to be consoled by his senior teammates as he walked down the tunnel.

After the game, the 19-year-old was sent vile, racist messages on Instagram. As reported by Sky Sports, a spokesman for Meta, the company which owns Instagram, has confirmed they had to delete several comments directed at Elanga. An investigation is ongoing.

After the game United manager Ralf Rangnick was supportive of the player, saying: "You could see that they [the players] supported him and everybody supported him.

"This has happened to more experienced players than him. It's a big shame for him but also for the whole club, for the supporters, for the team, because we did well in the last couple of weeks. We trained well, we played well in the first half especially and we are, therefore, very disappointed at the moment."

Marcus Rashford, who similarly suffered racist abuse after missing a penalty in England's penalty defeat to Italy in the Euro 2020 finals, also posted the following message on social media: "Anthony Elanga. Get that head of yours up immediately."
