Date : 8th May 1993 Score : Charlton 2 Boro 5 Starring : Reggie, Dickie Mint, 'Donny' Mark, Darren, Boydy, Ollie + supporting cast.

This was a minibus trip with yours truly driving, which doubled as Darren's stag night. A Sunday game so 7am wasn't too early to be off, plenty of time to be there for opening.

Fairly non eventful trip down and pre-match drinks, but the match was a bit special. Boro were doomed to finish in mid table obscurity, we had just sacked Lennie Lawrence and so went into this game without a manager.

But who needs a manager to motivate when you've got John Hendrie in your side, he took them apart single handed netting a hatrick in a 5-2 win. First time I had seen five Boro goals away from home since we thrashed Swansea 5-0 in the FA Cup back in 1984.

We planned to stop in Stainforth on the way home, a small ex-pit village just outside Doncaster. Stainy' was also the home of 'Donny' Mark so it was a chance to visit his locals, The Harvester and The Peacock. The Harvester was a bit too quiet for the lads so we ended up in The Peacock which was a bit livelier and had what was meant to be a disco in the corner. After tying Darren to the pub sign sign for a few hours and soaking him to the skin we decided to make our journey home.

It had gone midnight but they were still serving, it was a stop when the last man goes home type of pub. On trying to leave the village we were obstructed from leaving by a Police road block. Apparently some local psycho was on the loose and already killed his girlfriend and her lover. Common place around these parts apparently! We could not leave until he was apprehended so we were banged up in the village hall 'til the morning.

It's certainly the best excuse most of us have ever had for a day off work, held as suspects to murder!

Reggie.
