A reminder of last years campaign

First Round v Banik Ostrava (Czech Republic)
The Czech champions failed to progress into the Champions League group stage after being knocked out by Bayer Leverkusen, 6-2 on aggregate.

16th September, 1st leg: Boro 3 - 0 Banik Ostrava
Three second half goals from Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Mark Viduka (2) gave Boro a useful first leg lead.

30th September, 2nd leg: Banik Ostrava 1 - 1 Boro
A goal down at half-time and down to 10 men after an hour Boro hung on, the equaliser coming in stoppage time from young James Morrison.
This game will be rembered for the crowd trouble that erupted just before kick-off, thankfully it only lasted a metter of minutes.

21st October, Match Day 1:

Egaleo 0-1 Boro
Stewart Downing came off the bench to grab a late winner for Boro in warm and sticky conditions over in Athens.

Lazio 1-1 Villarreal
Lazio came from behind after Villarreal took an early lead in Rome.

4th November, Match Day 2:

Boro 2-0 Lazio
A goal in each half by Bolo Zenden gave Boro a well deserved victory over the Italians, in front of a near sell-out crowd at the Riverside.

Partizan Belgrade 4-0 Egaleo
Partizan began their UEFA Cup group campaign with an emphatic victory over the Greek minnows.

25th November, Match Day 3:

Villarreal 2-0 Boro
Boro boss Steve McClaren gambled by rested a number of first team regulars, a gamble which failed! Approximately 4,000 Boro fans made the trip to the Costa Blanca.

Lazio 2-2 Partizan Belgrade
Two second half goals earned Lazio a point after Partizan cruised to a 2-0 half time lead at the Olympic Stadium in Rome.

2nd December, Match Day 4:

Partizan Belgrade 1-1 Villrreal
Boro's two main rivals for the group played out a draw in Belgrade, which meant Boro stayed top of the group and had their destiny in their own hands.

Egaleo 2-2 Lazio
Lazio's failure to beat the Greek minnows guarenteed Boro's passage into the final knockout stage of the competition.

15th December, Match Day 5:

Boro 3-0 Partizan Belgrade
Two early goals from Szilard Nemeth and Joseph Job set Boro on their way against a disappointing Partizan side. James Morrison scored in injury time to seal a fine victory and guarentee that Boro won the group.

Villarreal 4-0 Egaleo
Two goals in each half allowed Villarreal to leapfrog Partizan into second place in the group and avoid the Champions League drop-outs.

17th February, Round of 32, 1st leg:

Grazer AK 2-2 Boro
Boro led twice in this game but would be satisfied by getting important away goals. After a goaless first half Bolo Zenden gave Boro the lead, Grazer equalised before JFH restored Boro's lead, but Grazer came back again to earn a draw.

24th February, Round of 32, 2nd leg:

Boro 2-1 Grazer AK
Grazer took an early lead as Boro started slowly, but the equaliser came after 20 minutes from James Morrison. JFH gave Boro the lead in the second half as Boro eased through 4-3 on aggregate.

10th March, Round of 16, 1st leg

Boro 2-3 Sporting Lisbon
Three goals in the first 20 minutes of the second half effectively won the tie for Sporting, however two late goals from Joseph Job and Chris Riggott gave Boro a glimmer of hope.

17th March, Round of 16, 2nd leg

Sporting Lisbon 1-0 Boro
Boro performed admirably with a patched up team and had a couple of great opportunities that could have made the game very interesting, but it wasn't to be, Sporting sealed victory in the dying minutes.
