Mowbray working on a winning formula for Boro

Boro's failure to score in either of their last two one-goal defeats to Millwall and Swansea City has put a significant dent in the hopes of a quick turnaround.

And Mowbray and his backroom team continue to work on the training ground in the hope of coming across the solution to their lack of creativity.

With a lack of funds to bring in new faces on loan or otherwise, the Middlesbrough boss has to try to make the squad he has inherited more creative.

There have been signs of progress, but after the impressive victory at Scunthorpe United there has been a slip back in to old habits and a lack of creating opportunities.

Dutch winger Marvin Emnes has been brought back from Swansea to increase the options and there is an acceptance that a lack of goals is not purely down to the strikers.

But Mowbray knows he could do with his attacking options forcing him in to a situation where they almost pick themselves, having stuttered in front of goal all season.

Leroy Lita has started both of Middlesbrough's last two matches, but has failed to add to the only goal he has scored this season which arrived in the victory over Reading on September 18.

Kris Boyd and Scott McDonald could start against Hull City on Saturday, as has often been the case this season, but they have only found the net five and four times respectively.

First team coach Mark Proctor admits there is no quickfix.

He said: We are trying Leroy Lita with Scott McDonald, Scott with Kris Boyd, we are tinkering to try to find a formula of someone hitting some form and a partnership gelling.

We are looking for that elusive solution, that's what we need to get going. Do we play a front three or a front two

There are lots of things to think about and we haven't found that formula just yet.

We have not clicked just yet, but hopefully it will be soon.

After winning two of Mowbray's first three matches in charge, optimism was creeping back in to the supporters after climbing out of the Championship's bottom three.

But successive defeats to Swansea and Millwall have plundered them back in to the relegation zone ahead of this Saturday's visit of struggling Hull. Proctor is concerned by the position, but is confident of a change in fortunes.

Things have changed dramatically at this club, said Proctor. It is a different Middlesbrough Football Club to it was a few years ago, we are in difficult situation now. Things run in cycles and we are in a pretty poor cycle at the moment.

Hopefully we can get out of that pretty quickly and start to move this club forward again.

Hull are not doing particularly well either, it is a league where top teams can beat bottom teams, we have to be confident.

A young Middlesbrough reserve team lost 5-0 at Birmingham on Tuesday. A Kevin Phillips hat-trick did most of the damage, while Spanish midfielders Enric Valles and Michel completed the rout.

Boro season card holders can enjoy the company of club legends from Jack Charlton's champions of 1974, enjoy a buffet lunch and watch Saturday's game with Hull for £35.

Non-card holders pay £55.
